MHSA Coaches' Education and Concussion Law Compliance

   
  All required coaches' education components, which include "Fundamentals of Coaching" and "Concussion in Sport," are found on the National Federation's coach education website at www.nfhslearn.com.  In addition, each coach must complete the sport-specific rules clinic each year, which can be found at www.mhsa.org.

MHSA Coaches’ Education Requirements

All member school athletic coaches are required to complete the NFHS online coaching program.  Every coach (all head, assistant and volunteer coaches) must meet the following requirements:   

Completion of the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching core course prior to contact with student-athletes.  Certification is good for a five-year period, inclusive of the first season in which the course is completed.   

Completion of the Concussion in Sports course prior to contact with student-athletes.  Certification is good for a one-year period.

Concussion Education and Compliance

On April 22, 2013, Governor Bullock signed the Dylan Steigers Protection of Youth Athletes Act into law.  

An athletic trainer, coach, or official shall remove a youth athlete from participation in any organized youth athletic activity at the time the youth exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion. 

Coaches, athletic trainers and officials are required to take the Concussion in Sports Course prior to contact with student-athletes.  Certification is good for a one-year period.
